Dear God, this is Liam.

On the weekend Liam asked me about God again.

- Where is God?
- Everywhere.
- Everywhere??!! How come people don't bump into her? Is she invisible?
- God is everywhere, even inside you and me.
- Inside me? .... Is that where love comes from?

Did She make the trees?

Last night Liam asked me who God is. Tough question to answer in a kid-friendly way... So I just resorted to: "God made everything around us: the sky, the earth, the air..." So Liam confirmed the things he could see out of the car window:

"Did She make the houses?"
"No, people build houses."
"Did She make the trees?"
"Yes."
"Did She make the bushes?"
"Yes"
"Did She make the signposts?"
"No, people make signposts."
"Did She make the fence around the garden?"
"No, people build fences."
"Did She make the grass?"
"Yes."
... and so on.

The most interesting thing for me was that Liam just used the pronoun "She" when referring to God. I wonder why. He used it so consistently that I was careful not to use any pronoun so that his use of the word "She" would remain his own and that there would not be a confusion around whether God is "He" or "She". There are many rules in all religions around the use of the word God, you may not utter God's name, you may not depict God etc. But there never seems to be a rule that you must not use a pronoun when referring to God, because God has no gender. I guess centuries and centuries of male-dominated religions have cemented the notion that God is "He". I certainly won't correct Liam's use of a pronoun for God. It is just as valid as "He".  I know that there is a whole branch of theology dedicated to this.

I just love the innocence of a 3-year-old naturally using the pronoun "She".
